What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates?
Joseph Pilates designed the Pilates Method in the early 1900s using principles or and movements incorporated in Yoga, Boxing, Circus, and Acrobatics. There are some similar movements involved in both Yoga and Pilates (i.e. Teaser/Navasana/Boat Pose, Swan/Bhujangasana/Cobra Pose, and Russian Splits/Anjaneyasana/Crescent Pose).
Pilates and Yoga both have flow or progression from one posture to the next. However, Pilates incorporates more isolated, repeated movements while sustaining a challenging posture, and Yoga incorporates more passive stretching, focused breathing, relaxation while sustaining a challenging posture. Pilates prioritizes core strengthening, spinal mobility, flexibility, and body weight or mechanical resistance for an overall healthier, more limber, and strong body. In addition to Pilates, MoveWell will also be offering Yoga sometime in the near future. Stay tuned!
